Historically, Dehradun has always been an important centre. Once, the stronghold of the Garhwal rulers it was captured by the British. The Battle of Nallapani was fought here between Gen. Gillespei and Gen. Bal Bhadra Thapa.
 
 
 
 
The Headquarters of many National Institutions are located in the city of Dehradun-ONGC, Survey of India etc. It has Rashtrapati Ashiyana on Rajpur Road. Dehradun is a major educational Centre, boasting of premier educational Institutes such as the Forest Research Institute, Rashtriya Indian Military college, Indian Military Academy, a host of public schools and colleges.
